Congenital adrenal hyperplasia occurs when one or both of the adrenal glands fail to develop correctly, resulting in excessive levels of aldosterone and cortisol produced. Adrenal insufficiency can also occur as a result of congenital abnormalities in the adrenal glands or secondary to other disorders (e.g., Addison’s disease). Furthermore, individuals with Turner syndrome have an increased risk for CAH due to their limited ability to respond to ACTH stimulation by increasing steroid production from their remaining normal ovaries.

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders worldwide, affecting nearly 350 million people across the globe. It can be treated by several drugs including tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). However, these drugs have many side effects such as increased appetite, weight gain and sexual dysfunction which limits their use to only about half of all patients suffering from depression.
